Printing the Game Board:

Download the Frog Math Game printable (link will be provided at the end of the post).

Print the game board on cardstock for added durability during playtime.

(Optional) You can laminate the game board for extra wear and tear protection.

Frog Counting for Preschoolers

For younger preschoolers (ages 3-4), this game focuses on counting! Have your student roll the die (or draw a number card with dots 1-3). Count the dots on the dice together. Then, add the same number of frog counters or mini erasers to the lily pad pond on the game board.

This is great practice for:

  • Counting: Develop their understanding of number sequence and counting skills.
  • Subitizing: Help them recognize the number of dots on the die instantly, without needing to count one by one.
  • Number Identification: Reinforce their ability to identify numbers on the die or card.
  • One-to-One Correspondence: Practice placing one frog manipulative for each dot on the die.

In the next section, we’ll explore how to adapt the game for older preschoolers who are ready to explore addition!

Adding Practice for Preschoolers

Now that your little one has mastered counting the dots on the die and adding manipulatives to the pond, let’s hop into some addition practice!

Here’s how to adapt the Frog Math Game for older preschoolers (ages 4-5):

  1. Roll and Add: Have your child roll the die. Instead of just adding frogs to the pond, explain that this time they need to add two groups of frogs!
  2. Two Options: There are two ways to approach this depending on your child’s comfort level:
    • Separate Piles: Have them collect two separate piles of frogs (ideally a smaller number like 1-3). Count the frogs in each pile together, then add them up to find the total number.
    • One Big Hop: For a trickier challenge, let them grab a bigger handful of frogs (within a reasonable range based on their counting skills). Count all the frogs together to find the total number that hopped into the pond.
  3. Recording the Results: Encourage your child to keep track of their answers! You can use a small whiteboard or piece of paper to write down the addition problem (e.g., 2 + 3 = 5).
  4. Multiple Rolls: For extra practice, they can roll the die multiple times throughout the game, adding a new group of frogs each time and recording the new sums.

Making it a Game:

  • Who Has More Frogs? Turn it into a friendly competition! Each player rolls the die and adds frogs to their pond. The player with the most frogs at the end wins!
  • Race to the Finish Line: Draw a simple path on a separate piece of paper and use the frog manipulatives to hop across the path. Each roll of the die determines how many spaces the frog can hop. The first frog to reach the finish line wins!

By incorporating addition and friendly competition, you can extend the learning potential of the Frog Math Game and keep your little one engaged for longer!

Fun with Frogs

There’s a reason our Frog Math Game is hopping with excitement – frogs hold a special place in many preschoolers’ hearts (and imaginations)! But what exactly makes these slimy, amphibious creatures so darn endearing?

Big Eyes & Bold Colors: Preschoolers are naturally drawn to bright colors and captivating features. Frogs, with their bulging eyes and vibrant colors (think green, red, yellow!), can be visually stimulating and spark curiosity.

Sounds & Movement: The croaking calls and surprising leaps of frogs can be both fascinating and funny to young children. The unexpected movements and noises add an element of surprise and keep them engaged.

Fairytale Connection: The classic “frog prince” story is a familiar tale for many preschoolers. This connection to a beloved story can make frogs seem magical and special, adding to their appeal.

Touch & Texture: While we wouldn’t recommend letting your child hold a wild frog, some toy frogs have a smooth, almost rubbery texture that can be interesting for little hands to explore (with adult supervision, of course!).

By incorporating this element of fun and wonder into the Frog Math Game, learning becomes an adventure. Who knew counting and adding could be so delightful?

Bonus Activity: After playing the game, extend the froggy fun with some additional activities like:

Froggy Craft Time: Grab some construction paper, googly eyes, and markers to create your own adorable paper frogs.

Read a Froggy Book: Cuddle up with your child and explore a picture book featuring frogs. There are many wonderful stories out there that celebrate these fascinating creatures!

Listen to Froggy Sounds: Take a virtual trip to a wetland habitat and listen to the sounds of real frogs online or with a nature app!

We hope you’re excited to dive into the pond-erful world of learning with our Frog Math Game! This engaging activity is a fantastic way to help your little one develop essential math skills while having a blast.
