What You’ll Do

Set your clay pot on the paper plate – this will catch any drips or splatters and keep your workspace clean. Grab the red paint and give your clay pot a nice, even coat. Once it’s painted, let’s find a spot to dry completely. We don’t want any smudged ladybugs!

After our red ladybug dries completely, it’s time to add some details! Grab that black paint and let’s give our ladybug a classic look. We can paint a straight line down the front of the clay pot, right in the middle.

Then, on either side of the line, use the black paint to dot some spots – the more spots, the merrier! Once your ladybug is decorated, let it dry completely again.

Now that our ladybug dry, it needs some antennae to really come alive! Grab your pipe cleaner and, with grown-up help, snip it in half with scissors. We’ll use each piece to make one antenna.

Take one half and fold it in half again. Now, at the folded end, gently curl the pipe cleaner a few times with your fingers to create a cute little antenna curl. Repeat this for the other half of the pipe cleaner, and voila – two antennae ready for action!

This next step requires a grown-up’s help since we’re using a hot glue gun! Be careful; hot glue can be very hot. When your grown-up is ready, ask them to place a tiny dot of hot glue on the very tip of one of your pipe cleaner antennae. Remember, safety comes first!

Once your grown-up has that tiny dot of hot glue on the tip of one antenna, carefully position it on the inside of the clay pot, just above the black line. Hold it there for a few seconds to let the glue cool and secure the antenna. Once the antennae are attached, gently fold them back a little for that classic ladybug look.

Then, to admire your creation in all its glory, set your ladybug friend down on its side!

What kind of paint should I use?

Craft paint works best for this project. Acrylic or tempera paints are both good options.

Materials

  • Small clay pot (any color)
  • Red and black acrylic craft paint
  • Paint brushes (fine and medium-sized)
  • Paper plate
  • Black pipe cleaner

Tools

  • Hot glue gun (adult supervision required)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Clay Pot: Place the clay pot on a paper plate to protect your workspace. Using the medium brush, apply a coat of red acrylic paint to the entire surface of the pot. Allow the paint to dry completely.
  2. Create the Ladybug Markings: Once the red paint is dry, use the fine brush and black acrylic paint to draw a vertical line down the center of the clay pot. Carefully paint small black dots on either side of the black line to resemble ladybug spots. The number of spots can be varied for a more natural look. Allow the black paint to dry completely.
  3. Craft the Antennae: With adult supervision, use scissors to cut the pipe cleaner in half. Take one-half of the pipe cleaner and fold it half lengthwise. Gently curl the folded end several times using your fingers to create a small, rounded antenna shape. Repeat this process for the other half of the pipe cleaner.
  4. Attach the Antennae (Adult Required): Using the hot glue gun and with adult supervision, carefully apply a small hot glue to the tip of one pipe cleaner antenna. While the glue is still hot, position the antenna on the inside rim of the clay pot, just above the black line. Hold the antenna in place for a few seconds to allow the glue to cool and secure. Repeat this process for the other antenna, ensuring they both face forward.
